In the southern half of Ecuador in the Loja province is a canton called Espíndola, named for the Espíndola river that sustains a bounty of flora and fauna in this otherwise impoverished region. The biodiversity of the land makes it a great place to grow coffee, and it is from this unique region that our Espíndola coffee is grown.
We purchased this coffee through our friends at Caravela, an importer and exporter that has been buying coffee from Ecuador for the last decade. After the coffee leaf rust crisis ravaged this region in recent years, the amount of specialty coffee left here was only about 200,000 bags annually. In response, Caravela opened its own milling and exporting business in Quito as well as a buying station in Loja province, which allows small producers to deliver coffee directly to purchasing agents. Nowadays, lots purchased like this are traceable all the way back to the farm, and the process is more efficient for everyone.
Made up of lots from five smallholder farmers (with coffee-growing plot sizes of only 3-4 hectares each), these Caturra and Typica beans grow between 1,700–1,800 meters above sea level. This shade-grown coffee is fully washed and displays a light body, walnut, toffee and green grape brightness in the cup.
