Kenya Thirikwa Gakuyuini 12oz

Joe is proud to purchase beautiful Kenyan coffees year after year, including this Thirikwa Gakuyuini, which we are excited to bring back for the third year in a row.

The Gakuyuini factory is a wet mill located on the slopes of Mount Kenya in the Kirinyaga District, about 80 miles from Nairobi, and part of the Thirikwa Farmers Cooperative Society. In this region, the majority of coffee farms, which sit between 1,600 and 1,700 meters above sea level, are very small. Of the 1,553 smallholder farmers in this co-op, 674 are women. Member farmers bring ripe cherries to sell at the wet mill, including SL-28, SL-34, and Ruiru 11 varieties.

After Gakuyuini and the cooperative pay farmers for the cherries, they proceed with processing. Here at the wet mill, the coffee cherries are depulped and fermented for 24 hours before being washed in channels and moved to a tank of water for a final soak. The coffee is then dried on raised beds in the sun. At night and during the hottest parts of the day, the coffee is covered to prevent uneven drying. After the coffee reaches an optimal moisture level, parchment is delivered to a dry mill where the outer husks are removed and the coffee is sorted into seven quality categories, corresponding to bean size designations, including this coffee, which is graded AA.

These careful methods as well as the phosphorous-rich, red volcanic soil lend Kenyan coffees their unique brightness and complexity. In the cup, we find notes of nectarine, pomegranate, and honey.

All orders are roasted on Monday and Thursday and are shipped on the same day. Note that if you order Two-Day Shipping after 7am on any given day, your order will be processed *the following roast day*. We do this to ensure your coffee arrives to you as fresh as possible!

All coffee is delivered whole bean. If you need your order ground, please specify your brew method in the special instructions section.
