Rwanda's Gatare washing station is located in the Nyamasheke region of the Western Province, just inland from Lake Kivu. In operation since 2003, Gatare was one of the first washing stations in Rwanda to process cherry specifically for the specialty coffee market. More than 1,800 local farmers deliver to the Gatare washing station, of whom approximately 65% are women farmers. A recent change in management at the coffee factory shows renewed potential for quality here, along with continued improvements in farmer payment and bonuses. The factory is relatively large, and is poised to grow in both capacity and quality in the near future.
This particular coffee is a fully washed Bourbon grown at 1,765 meters above sea level, and was processed using a 24-hour fermentation and dried on raised beds. Its big, bright cup is packed with honey sweetness and apple notes, in a beautifully light body.
